Yet another reason why US colleges should start treating students like adults - and give them their own rooms. The idea that rooming together is necessary to make friends or whatever, isn't borne out. Colleges and universities all over the world have single rooms for their freshmen and most of them still manage to create bonds and lasting friendships.
In all the time I've been a mother (with 3 college experiences), most of the issues have been room-mate related. Sharing a room with a stranger means yo uhave no private place to go when you need to. Starting college is stressful enough without the added layer of roomies.
(And yes, I'm sure I'll hear from some who say they loved it etc, My point is, you don't need to be sleeping in the same room as someone to make friends with them. )
