I'm pretty sure the writer would love to "let him live his life and you live yours", but if you read the piece, it's not happening. The girlfriend is inserting herself and deliberately sabotaging the mother's plans. It doesn't matter what she's going through herself, or what other excuses you're going to make for her, admonishing the writer like this is shifting the blame squarely on her.
