Banter doesn't have to be degrading. I often hear people say they 'loved the banter' and what they mean is they loved the back and forth between people. It can be funny and not insulting at all.

The 'banter' that people hide behind when they're bullying or insulting people is not okay, but it doesn't mean that all banter is bad.
