As others have said, it's triggering for your mother because of her own experiences. While it doesn't mean your child is the victim of similar circumstances, you say yourself that your husband's change in tone is audible and you sometimes have to tell him to stand back. He might be causing an escalation anyway, so perhaps asking an expert how better to handle things might be the way to go for the three of you.
